Winter Wheat ?

     Mid Sept  is usually prime time for harvest in the Prairies !  This year it brought early snow and verrry little sunshine !  It stayed cool and damp and sadly the white never really left the crop ... there were scattered days that allowed for a bit of harvest but if you weren't done harvest early it turned into a severe test of patience to see when harvest could resume... for many in the West it just wasn't possible to finish harvest this fall.  The snow melted off and on and eventually it did cover many acres of unharvested crop.   Wheat was the main crop left out in the cold... this picture is around Erickson, Manitoba.... it's not a Kernels field but it shows the snow level when it was still pretty low!   Much of the wheat that was left out wasn't put into swaths.... it was left standing so it could be straight combined.... not much left standing anymore because it is mainly flat on the ground due to the weight of the snow (s) !   We often think we can control our crop result but in many cases  the weather has a lot more say than we do.

A crazy Harvest season !

Harvest was pleasantly bountiful at the end of a dry season on the Prairies,,,  so dry ... but the bushels were developed mainly from  reserve moisture and then it snowed    and rained and snow... this was at Brandon on Oct 19.  Ron was able to finish the soybeans as the clouds approached.  The rainbow showed up in the back of the truck as we were nearly finished the field.  We dumped the beans into the truck and then it poured rain !    The rainbow could be taken as representing a true pot of gold for the people in Ethiopia we are helping to help themselves.   with the match one truck = 5 !  It dired up after to give farmers in some areas another chance to harvest but it is still a struggle for many !   Stay tuned !

WallyWheat !

Wally and Eunice have been Kernels of Hope Virtual farmers from the start but look what they are up to now !   This wheat is planted along the street near their house in Edmonton !   Wally has a Kernels of Hope sign up and is getting all kinds of interest and questions of what we do !

Our 2018 Project in Wolaita Ethiopia

     The Crops are off and running...  below are a few shots of the Soybeans that are growing at the VanHeyst's north of Brandon... the seed took awhile to get going...I drive by this field nearly everyday...   after awhile I had to stop and see if it was growing... it was !   it had a rain to get it started then not  much moisture after that so far... that has allowed the crop to set deep roots again looking for subsoil water.  Along with the water it finds it gets much welcomed nutrients,,,  same things people all over need !  Now we need just the right amount of water heat and lack of storms and hail...   stay tuned  !
